//Stop-Limit Order Overview, How It Works, Uses, Risks

If there is a collection of buy stop orders above a resistance level, this will typically be confirmed by an increase in volume. Each of the breakouts shown on the chart was on increased volume relative to recent volume. Buy stops above is based on the technical analysis concepts of support and resistance.

No one can predict the future exactly, but many traders know whether they should open a long position or take out shorts on a price. As they form a thesis and look to the future, accomplished traders will also seek to protect themselves from uncertainty. While there may be other types of orders—market, stop and limit orders are the most common. Be comfortable using them because improper execution of orders can cost you money. Besides using the limit order to go short near a resistance, you can also use this order to go long near a support level. In this case, you can place a limit-buy order a few pips above that support level so that your long order will be filled when the market moves down to that specified price or lower.

Additionally, brokerages may have different definitions for determining if a stop or limit price has been met. The stop price you set triggers the execution of the order and is based on the price at which the stock was last traded. The limit price you set is the limit that sets price constraints on the trade and must be executed at that price or better. The key differences in buy limit and sell stop orders are based on the order type. Understanding these orders requires understanding the differences in a limit order vs. a stop order. A limit order sets a specified price for an order and executes the trade at that price.

Traders call this a false breakout, meaning the rise in price beyond a resistance level wasn’t sustained. The investor could place a stop loss order to be triggered when Pfizer’s stock price begins backsliding. For example, they might set a stop loss price of $58 a share, so that they could capture some trading gain. Or they might set the price at $55, buy stop price to try to minimize their loss from the false breakout. Brokerage systems also provide for advanced order types that allow a trader to specify prices for buying or selling in the market. These advanced orders can eliminate slippage and ensure that a trade executes at an exact price if and when the market reaches that price during the time specified.

If there’s a drop and someone sells at or below $22, this triggers your order. This means that the order becomes a market order and you can sell at the next price available. A stop-limit order does not guarantee that the trade will be executed, because the price may never beat the limit price. If the limit order is attained for a short duration, it may not be executed when there are other orders in the queue that utilize all stocks available at the current price.

You can use a stop order as an automatic entry or exit trigger upon a certain level of price movement in a specified direction; it’s often used to attempt to protect an unrealized gain or minimize a loss. But it said it expected cash use to decline over the coming years, once the current financial squeeze had eased. Nvidia’s stock looks to be losing a bit of steam, as over the past three months it’s up by just 5%.

In the above scenario, assume that the trader has a large short position on ABC, meaning that she is betting on a future decline in its price. To hedge against the risk of the stock’s movement in the opposite direction i.e., an increase of its price, the trader places a buy stop order that triggers a buy position if ABC’s price increase. Thus, even if the stock moves in the opposite direction, the trader stands to offset her losses.

Order Types: Market, Limit and Stop Orders

An investor looking only to protect against catastrophic short position loss from significant upward movement will open a buy stop order above the original short sale price. Similarly, you can set a limit order to sell a stock when a specific price is available. Imagine that you own stock worth $75 per share and want to sell if the price gets to $80 per share. A limit order can be set at $80, which will be filled only at that price or better. Just remember that you cannot set a limit order to sell below the current market price because there are better prices available.

Limit Orders

That is when the price moves above resistance, but there is not enough buying interest to keep the price up there. Instead, more sellers come back in, pushing the price back below resistance. Resistance and support are areas where the price has struggled to move higher or lower, respectively. Both areas are the result of a concentration of limit orders at those prices. At resistance, investors have placed a disproportionate number of sell limit orders.

As discussed, there are not always enough buy stop orders above resistance levels to keep pushing the price higher. The price may fall, in which case technical traders use a stop loss to help limit their risk of loss. A buy stop-limit order covers the short sale when a particular price is reached, at which point the order converts into a limit order. The buy stop-limit order will only be executed at the specified limit price or better, similar to the sell stop-limit order. Say, you place a buy limit order with a price that’s above Monday’s closing market price for a stock.

These orders could be placed by people looking to enter long positions if the price breaks above the key level. Buy stop orders are also placed by people in short positions looking to exit if the price moves above the resistance level. In either case, there are likely buy stop orders above the resistance level. With a buy limit order, the brokerage platform will buy the stock at the specified price or a lower price if it arises in the market. It will not execute if the market never reaches the price level specified.
